KENTRI

Kentri, is a village near Ierapetra, just 2 km northeast. It is located at an altitude of just 50 meters from the sea and was probably used for cultivation, olive groves and vegetables, during the Minoan period by the inhabitants of the then large city of Ierapytna, today's Ierapetra.

Today Kentri has 1,021 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census and its inhabitants are mainly engaged in the production of oil and horticultural products in greenhouses. Until 1970 and for over 150 years, the village was one of the best in the production of clay pots, as well as Thrapsano in the prefecture of Heraklion. After 1970, the appearance and production of plastic containers, at a much lower purchase price, was the cause of the disappearance of this art, which existed in Crete since the Minoan period.

The first mention of the village was "Katsogianni" and "Parereonta Kentrio", from the name of the river Kentri.

In the village is celebrated every year, the Holy Trinity, with a big feast in the central square of the village, as well as Agia Paraskevi.

In September 2018, a farmer accidentally discovered in his olive grove, a large subsidence, which was projected by the breaking of a water pipe. Looking inside, there was a stone chest at a depth of about two to three meters.

He immediately called the archeological service which discovered two chests dating to 1,200 to 1,400 BC. and which have been intact there for over 3,400 years. In one of the coffins they found a male skeleton and next to it scattered many clay vessels, containers for liquids or food to accompany the deceased in later life.
