AMARIANO
Amariano is located about 30 km southeast of Heraklion at the foot of Mount Afentis, at an altitude of 550 meters. It is a small village with a population of 300 inhabitants, with a characteristic beauty, with stone houses and a square covered by a majestic plane tree, hiding in the trunk of its trunk a small church. For guests there are cafes with raki and traditional delicacies, as well as taverns with traditional and modern cuisine.
Amariano is located 1.5 km from Kastamonitsa, about 4 km from Mathia and 8 km southeast of Kasteli. On the road to Kastelli, is located at a distance of 3 km and Lyttos (formerly Xydas) a large city during the Minoan period. In the surroundings is the church of Agios Georgios of Kefaliotis with frescoes that are in good condition.
The earliest mention of the place name is made in documents of 1394-99 Amariano and Mariano. It is also mentioned in the province of Pediados in 1577 by Fr. Barozzi, by Kastrofylakas in 1583 with 285 inhabitants and by Vasilikatas in 1630.
In the Turkish census of 1671 it is mentioned with 105 engravings. In the Egyptian census of 1834, it is mentioned with 15 Christian families. In the census of 1881, Amariano is mentioned in the Municipality of Kastelli with 312 Christian inhabitants. In 1900 it refers to the same Municipality with 372 inhabitants. In 1928 it is mentioned as the seat of a homonymous community with 381 inhabitants. 2011 appears with 159 inhabitants.
Its inhabitants are engaged in the production of oil and raisins. The cultural association of the village, organizes every year a big festival of the 20th of September for the honor of Agios Efstathios, but also of the 15th of August, for the feast of Panagia.
