AGIOS SILAS
The village of Agios Sillas has 546 inhabitants according to the 2001 Census and is located 15 km southwest of Heraklion at the foot of Yukhtas with a very nice view to the sea and is built at an altitude of 250 meters.
The Municipal Department of which it is based, has 881 inhabitants according to the same census. This apartment includes the settlements of Zervos Metochi with 39 inhabitants, Kampos with 164 inhabitants, the village of Tsagaraki with 97 inhabitants and Malades with 35 inhabitants. In Agios Sillas there is a primary school and a kindergarten.
It is said that most of the inhabitants come from Asia Minor but also from the province of Mylopotamos. The name of Agios Sillas is due to Agios Sillas who is also its protector.
In Kastrofylakas of 1583 it is mentioned with 265 inhabitants but also earlier in 1320 with the name village of the area of Chandakas. In older documents of 1305 it is mentioned that in Agios Sillas, there are two churches, of Panagia and Agios Silas which is the real name of the Saint and later it was mistakenly transformed into Agios Sillas.
The main occupation of the inhabitants is viticulture and recently olive cultivation.
During the German occupation, in Agios Sillas and especially in the Hamamoutzis cave, the oath of the National Resistance against the German invaders was taken. Great battles were fought in the area, with great losses of both.
Another worth visiting is the "old bridge" located at the "inn of Agios Sillas".
Every year on July 29 a big festival is organized on the eve of the patron saint Silas.
